PEARS Course
The AHA’s PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization) Course has been updated to reflect science in the 2015 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC. In this classroom-based, Instructor-led course, students learn how to use a systematic approach to quickly assess, recognize the cause, and stabilize a pediatric patient in an emergency situation.
During PEARS, students interact with real patient cases, and realistic simulations and animations to assess and stabilize pediatric patients experiencing respiratory and shock emergencies, and cardiopulmonary arrest. PEARS prepares students to provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes of response until a child can be transferred to an advanced life support provider.
Who should take this course?
The AHA’s PEARS Course is designed for healthcare providers and others who might encounter pediatric emergency situations during their work, including:
- Physicians and nurses not specializing in pediatrics
- Nurse practitioners
- Physician assistants
- EMTs,
- Respiratory therapists
- Prehospital and in-facility healthcare providers (outside of critical-care areas)
- Outpatient clinic staff
- School-based providers
- Any other healthcare provider who infrequently sees critically ill or injured infants and children
What does this course teach?
- Systematic pediatric assessment
- Recognition and stabilization of respiratory emergencies
- Recognition and stabilization of shock emergencies
- Recognition and stabilization of cardiopulmonary arrest
- Resuscitation team concept
PALS Course
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS):
- For healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children and for personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units
What does this course teach?
The PALS Provider Course aims to improve outcomes for pediatric patients by preparing healthcare providers to effectively recognize and intervene in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest by using high‐performance team dynamics and high‐quality individual skills. The course includes a series of case scenario practices with simulations that reinforce important concepts. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the multiple-choice exam with a minimum score of 84%. Topics include:
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to
- Perform high‐quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) per American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support (BLS) recommendations
- Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention
- Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within 10 seconds
- Apply team dynamics
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure
- Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure
- Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock
- Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock
- Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias
- Describe clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias
- Implement post–cardiac arrest management
PEPP Course
- Strengthens critical-thinking skills through case-based, visual lectures.
- Builds your knowledge base.
- Lets you choose from a traditional onsite class or a hybrid.
- Offers a simple dashboard to register for a course and track your progress.
- Affirms your success with continuing education credits offered through the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE).
Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP), Fourth Edition is an evidence-based resource of essential medical content for the assessment and management of infants and children in the field. This respected and ground-breaking program paired physicians and EMS providers together to ensure the content reflects current best practices and the realities of the field. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is designed to give prehospital professionals the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to effectively assess and manage pediatric patients.
PEPP combines world-class content with engaging features and an interactive course to truly prepare prehospital professionals to care for pediatric patients.
Flexible Course Options:
- PEPP Course Coordinators may offer a 2-day onsite course or a 1-day enhanced hybrid course at the BLS or ALS level.
- The onsite course features interactive case-based lectures where students apply their knowledge in a safe environment.
- The hybrid course features case-based online modules with engaging interactivities, including rapid skills demonstration videos that students complete before attending the onsite portion for hands-on skill station coaching and small-group discussions.
- The BLS-level courses are geared toward emergency responders and EMTs, while the ALS-level courses are geared toward AEMTs and Paramedics.
Pediatric Burn Management

Topics include:
- A & P of burn injuries
- Burn types
- Basic burn care
- Burn size estimation
- Fluid calculation
- Electrolyte Imbalnaces
- Case reviews
- Scenario based questions for review
OB Emergencies
This course teaches the fundamentals of OB emergency management including the recognition and stabilization of the classic birth complications. This is a lecture and hands on course that last approximately 4 hours, taught by an instructor that has real world OB experience.
Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) Essentials
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®) course conveys an evidence-based approach to care of the newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery. This course content delivers curricula for Essentials Providers, which is appropriate for everyone involved in the care of a newborn and who may be called upon to initiate resuscitation including positive pressure ventilation.
Upon completion of this continuing medical education activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the principles of neonatal resuscitation.
- Identify the need for resuscitation and how to provide initial steps of resuscitation.
- Define the practices for preparing for resuscitation.
- State the knowledge and skills essential to provide positive-pressure ventilation during neonatal resuscitation.
- Recognize the principles of neonatal resuscitation.
- Identify the need for resuscitation and how to provide initial steps of resuscitation.
- Identify the knowledge and equipment essential to determine and provide positive.
